64 letters written by Samuel Curtis to his brother Henry B. concerning business ventures, politics, and local and family news. Accompanied by five letters from other family members to Henry B., one by Samuel's wife Belinda, one by Samuel's son Henry Zarah, two by Samuel Prentis Curtis, and one by Samuel's son Samuel S. The letters are written primarily from St. Louis, Council Bluffs, Keokuk, and Washington, D.C. Samuel's letters describe these cities, and reveals his opinions regarding their potential growth. He also discusses his ferry business in Council Bluffs and land investments in Omaha. From 1858-1861 Samuel writes from Washington and discusses the election, secession and the beginning of the Civil War. He writes from Head-Quarters Camp of Instruction, Benton Barracks,(near St. Louis, Mo.) in Oct and Dec 1861, from Head Quarters, Department of the Missouri, St. Louis, Mo. in Oct 1862, and Head Quarters Department of Kansas, Fort Leavenworth, in 1864. He describes his experiences while treating with the Indians in 1865 at Fort Sully, South Dakota, and then his work on the Union Pacific Railroad in the year before he died. The letters from other family members discuss family business ventures and news.
